Aesthetic Upgrade: From PFM to Zirconia Crowns in Kathmandu, Nepal

– Big Smile Dental Clinic Team

A beautiful smile is often a key aspect of one’s self-esteem and confidence. Dental advances over the years have made smile restoration and enhancement possible, achieving both natural look and feel. One key innovation is zirconia crowns replacing porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns, especially for front teeth. This transformation can dramatically improve a smile’s aesthetics. This case will explore the benefits and process of replacing unnatural-looking PFM crowns with zirconia crowns that appear natural.

Her Concern

A woman recently came to Big Smile Dental Clinic & Prosthodontic Center. Her smile was a major concern for her. She particularly disliked the unnatural appearance of her PFM crown and the grayish black line at the gumline. To address these issues, she wanted to replace the PFM crown with a zirconia crown and have her smile redesigned.

Treatment Phase

First, we conducted a thorough examination to evaluate the condition of her existing crowns. Notably, all six crowns were connected, which we believe is not the most ideal approach.

Next, we listened attentively to her expectations and goals for her smile design. In order to create a treatment plan that aligned with her desires, we then took photographs, X-rays, and impressions of her teeth.

We collaboratively discussed our proposed treatment plan. We also presented her with a model showcasing the planned smile design and explained what to expect throughout the process.

Once she was completely satisfied with the plan, we decided to proceed with the crown replacement. Here are the steps involved in the replacement process:

1st Visit:

  • Examination & consultation was done, dental photography & x-ray was taken and impression was made for teeth model analysis.

2nd Visit :

  • Treatment planning was discussed and procedure was explained.
  • Removal of PFM Crowns:  The existing PFM crowns were carefully removed to avoid damaging the underlying tooth structure.
  • Preparation of Teeth: The teeth were prepared to accommodate the new zirconia crowns.
  • Impressions: Impressions of the prepared teeth were made to create custom zirconia crowns that fit precisely.
  • Temporary Crowns: Temporary crowns were placed to protect the prepared teeth while the zirconia crowns are being fabricated.

3rd Visit:

  • Try-in Zirconia Crowns: Custom Zirconia crowns were tried in for fit, shape, color and bite.

4th Visit:

  • Placement of Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia crowns (not joined together) were placed carefully to make natural looking teeth and to make her smile big and beautiful.

Benefits of Replacing PFM Crowns with Zirconia Crowns

1. Aesthetics: Zirconia crowns closely resemble natural teeth due to their translucency and ability to be shaded to match the surrounding teeth. This results in a seamless and beautiful smile.

2. Biocompatibility: Zirconia is biocompatible, meaning it is less likely to cause allergic reactions or irritation in the mouth compared to metal-based crowns.

3. Durability: Zirconia crowns are known for their strength and resistance to chipping, making them a long-lasting option for dental restorations.

4. No Metal Alloys: Zirconia crowns do not contain metal alloys, eliminating the risk of metal allergies and the appearance of a grayish hue at the gum line.

Conclusion

Replacing PFM crowns with natural-looking zirconia crowns on front teeth can dramatically transform a smile, improving both aesthetics and function. Zirconia crowns also offer several advantages, such as enhanced aesthetics, biocompatibility, and durability. The replacement process requires careful planning and precision to achieve the desired outcome.

This patient, for example, was thrilled with her beautiful, big new smile. She expressed her gratitude to our team for taking such good care of her smile. Our team, in turn, was proud to restore her teeth with natural-looking individual zirconia crowns, creating a big and beautiful smile.
